SpiritHorse Liberty Therapeutic Riding Center Receives Donation

LIBERTY, October 11, 2016 – SpiritHorse Liberty Therapeutic Riding Center received a check from Sam Houston Electrical Cooperative Charitable Foundation, out of Livingston, on Monday, October 10, 2016. The Sam Houston Electrical Cooperative Charitable Foundation asks their customers to round up their bill. These funds are put together and the board of directors selects a non-profit 501c3 to receive their donation.

The receiving organization must meet three criteria to be eligible for this donation : make a difference in peoples' lives, be a non-profit 501c3 organization, and have an all volunteer staff. SpiritHorse Liberty definitely meets these requirements. With the help of donations like this, SpiritHorse Therapeutic Riding Center served 263 clients during 2015. Each child we help makes a positive difference in the whole family. The therapeutic riding center opened in 2010 with two autistic boys and two therapeutic horses. Now, there are ten therapeutic horses and the fall session began with 63 riders.

Staff at SpiritHorse agree they are the ones that are blessed. Children have said their first words during a lesson and have learned to sit up while on a horse. SpiritHorse provides the only child development services some of the riders receive.

Lessons are research based, private, equine assisted, and highly effective. Each lesson includes horse management as part of the curriculum, incorporating responsibility and ownership. Each rider, to his ability, leads, grooms, and saddles his horse before and after each lesson. While riding, the student's individual needs, such as speech, sensory integration, balance, behavior and cognitive processing are addressed. Core and muscle strength, focus to task, self respect, and social ability improve also.

SpiritHorse Liberty serves people with cognitive, behavior, emotional, and physical disabilities.

Clients come from the surrounding counties of Chambers, Jefferson, Montgomery, Hardin, San Jacinto, Harris, Polk, and Galveston plus locally from Liberty County. SpiritHorse Liberty offers lessons to special needs children and/or adults free of charge. Typical participants donate $20.
