Mac and cheese recalled after reports of allergic reactions
WASHINGTON, December 12, 2016 – Several consumers have reported allergic reactions after eating Earth Balance brand macaroni and cheese, spurring Boulder Brands Inc. to recall all of the vegan varieties of cheddar and white cheddar flavors of the product.
“Boulder Brands initiated the recall after being informed by consumers that the product may contain a dairy allergen. People with a dairy allergy or sensitivity run the risk of a serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” according to the recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.
“The recalled products were distributed nationally. All affected distributors and retail customers are being notified and the affected products are being removed from store shelves.”
The recall notice did not indicate what retailers received the implicated macaroni and cheese products. The FDA cannot release such distribution information because of federal law regarding “confidential corporate information.”
All products that expire in 2017 are included in the recall. The recalled items can be identified by the code embossed on the bottom of the package. The ‘17’ in the code identifies product that will expire in 2017.
Consumers who have an allergy to dairy should not consume these products. Affected product may be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Boulder Brands at 888-299-7646.
