Anyone who has eaten any of the recalled pistachios and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention and alert their doctors to the possible exposure to the pathogen. Salmonella is a microscopic organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell bad. Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea that can be bloody, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
