Accidental Death of Four Year Old Boy

DAYTON, February 11, 2016 – On Tuesday, February 9th. at around 1:50 pm, Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Ruben Arellano was on routine patrol near CR 4893 in west Liberty County when he received a “911” call nearby at #207 CR 4893. Arriving almost immediately at the address given he encountered the hysterical mother who pointed out her 4 year old son who had just been seriously injured by a heavy bar-b-q pit that the little boy had apparently pulled over onto himself. Without hesitation, Dep. Arellano began administering CPR to the child while an ambulance was in route. In spite of the valiant efforts of Dep. Arellano, the little boy, Bryan Jara, was pronounced deceased upon his arrival at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

According to lead Investigator Sgt. Paul Lasco, the child’s mother was in the home doing her chores while her young son went into the yard, as he often does, to play. When she heard a “thud” sound from outside, she ran out to find her son pinned under a very heavy steel bar-b-q pit which, from preliminary investigation, appears he was trying to climb on and the pit fell over on him. Two other children, ages 6 years old and 8 years old were at school at the time of this accident.

Sgt. Lasco said that although the investigation is continuing as it was difficult to fully interview the distraught mother at the time, that at present, it does appear to have been a tragic accident. An autopsy has been ordered which will be conducted by the Harris County Medical Examiners Office.
