Man Spotted Breaking into Coke Machine

LIBERTY, January 2, 2015 - Around 4:30 AM on New Year’s Day a resident at the motel on US 90 near FM 563 called the Liberty Police Department and reported that a young, black, male was attempting to break into the coke machine.

Corporal Frank Longoria responded to the call and found the man hiding around a corner at the motel. The man took off running around the motel and was attempting to jump a fence when an assisting Sheriff’s Deputy used a taser on the man.

An ambulance was summoned to the scene to remove the taser prongs.

The man was identified as Melvin Lawrence Smith age 20 of Spring, TX.

Found inside the man’s Chevy vehicle was Xanax tablets, a green leafy substance thought to be marijuana and a stack of one dollar bills in the passenger seat.

The man was arrested and charged with Attempted Burglary of a Coin Operated Machine, Possession of a Controlled Substance, penalty group 3 and Possession of Marijuana and transported to the Liberty County Jail.
