Houston Audubon High Island Sanctuaries Open House Saturday April 4, 2015
HIGH ISLAND, April 1, 2015 - Wildlife watchers from around the world come to High Island each spring. They come for close up views of herons, egrets and spoonbill as they display, build nests and feed chicks in the Rookery. They enjoy watching gators patrolling the ponds watching for careless birds and turtles climbing out of the ponds laying their eggs on the trails. They hope to see tired migrating birds that have just crossed the Gulf of Mexico. Houston Audubon invites you, your family, and friends to join them at the High Island sanctuaries Open House Saturday April 4, 2015, when admission will be free for all visitors.
The sanctuaries are open dawn to dusk but if you visit between 9am and 4pm, there will be helpful volunteers stationed around the sanctuaries to enhance your visit. Free bird walks with professional tour guides are scheduled at 8:30am at Boy Scout Woods and at 4pm at Smith Oaks Sanctuary.
When you plan your trip to the High Island Open House, make sure to schedule a stop at St Mathew’s Methodist Church for lunch. The church sells barbecue lunches every Saturday in April from 11am until the food runs out and they make delicious barbecue.
