Fake I.R.S Returns
LIBERTY, February 5, 2015 - This is a “Public Awareness” alert to Citizens of Liberty County from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office regarding fake I.R.S returns being filed in the names of innocent victims.
Although this activity has already been reported on in the larger cities media outlets, this is to inform the citizens of Liberty County that such criminal activity has also become active here within our own county.
According to Sheriff’s Sergeant “Bubba” Pearson, the Sheriff’s Office has already taken several complaints from local citizens who reports they have been contacted by letter from the I.R.S regarding the fact that someone with their social security number and name has already filed for a refund and it has been paid. As the tax season gets closer, more such fraud cases can be expected.
Sgt. Pearson advises there are several steps the victim of such cases must take according to the letter sent out by the I.R.S. First the victim must file a police report with their local law enforcement agency. Then a Form 14039 which is an I.D Theft affidavit must be submitted. The victim’s bank must be contacted and advised of the fraud. A complaint must then be filed with the Federal Trade Commission as well as contacting the Social Security Office. The letter goes on to say that for further information, the victim can log onto WWW.IRS.GOV.
The Sheriff’s Office continues to recommend that citizens pay very close attention to their personal identification and the release of any such information to persons or organization(s) that may call for such information. Personal information should be shredded before it is discarded in the trash and citizens should monitor their home mail boxes to assure their mail is secure.
