Mail Box Thefts
LIBERTY, February 5, 2015 - The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a “public awareness” notice that outside mail boxes at the Hardin and Daisetta Post Offices have had the locks cut off the mail boxes and the mail stolen. According to Deputy William Candelari who has taken from 30 to 40 reports from citizen’s who’s checking accounts have been hit or credit card information stolen, the Sheriff’s Office has had over one hundred reports of such cases within the last three (3) weeks.
It appears the thieves are “washing’ the checks found in the mail thus changing the amount payable and the payee to all but clean out a person bank account. Credit cards and debit card numbers are being stolen and used.
It is reasonable to assume that the thefts may move to other post offices in the Liberty County area so citizens are being advised to pay attention to the fact that your bills may go unpaid although you have sent a check through the mail which should alert you that it is possible your mail may have been stolen. In addition, Sgt. Chris Ungles who is coordinating and conducting the follow up investigation on these cases, is recommending that citizens take mail to the inside mail drops rather than use the outside drop boxes at any of your local post office facilities. It is also quite possible that mail could be stolen from a person’s personal mail box in front of your home therefore caution should be exercised in putting sensitive mail and/or checks in unsecured mail boxes at your home
Sgt. Ungles is asking that if anyone has any information regarding these thefts to call the Sheriff’s Office at (936) 336-4500 and provide him with your information.
