Arrest in Sexual Assault Case

LIBERTY, June 17, 2015 - In a very intense and persistent criminal sexual assault investigation that occurred a month ago to the day, Liberty County Sheriff’s Investigators, members of the agencies Special Response Team, Texas Rangers, Pct. 3 Constable’s office and the District Attorney’s Office led by Sheriff Bobby Rader arrested MIKLE BERNARD EDWARDS, D.O.B. 3-1-58, a convicted felon, on three felony warrants at Edwards home in the 13000 Blk. of Hwy. 787 in north Liberty County at approximately 6:00 pm yesterday evening.

Edwards offered no resistance according to lead Investigator Sgt. Josh Cummins who has worked tirelessly on this case since it occurred. Edwards lived within three (3) miles of the location in which the sexual assault took place.

Working off of information by a citizen and based upon an artist forensic sketch of the two suspects the young female complainant identified Mikle Edwards as being one of the two subjects who raped her after she thought she was meeting “Julie Rae” to buy a custom made belt from an on-line company called “Leather Works by Julie Rae”. Three felony warrants were issued by Justice of the Peace Judge Stephen Hebert of Pct. 1 for the arrest of Mikle Edwards and the warrants were executed late yesterday evening.

According to Sgt. Cummins, Edwards is working with he and other Sheriff’s Investigators to identify the second suspect wanted in this sexual assault case. The investigation is continuing to determine if the “Leather Works by Julie Rae” is a legitimate sales site or a “scam” to lure women into a trap for such offenses to take place.

Sheriff Rader said he would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that helped the Sheriff’s Office with this case which includes concerned citizens, other law enforcement agencies along with the dedicated investigative work by Detective/Sgt. Josh Cummins who led the entire investigation that ultimately led to the arrest of this defendant. The Sheriff went on to say the Sheriff’s investigators will use the information gained in this arrest to apprehend the other defendant and that all the agencies involved in this investigation and final arrest process did a very professional job in executing the three felony warrants.

Sheriff Rader also stated that he would like to especially thank the news media for their efforts in making public in the print media as well as the various on-line media publications the forensic sketch of these wanted suspect which eventually led to the identification and arrest of Mikle Edwards and the clearing of this case.

Mikle Bernard Edwards, D.O.B. 3-1-58 was placed in the Liberty County jail charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault, Aggravated Kidnapping and Aggravated Robbery with a bond of $100K on each of the three (3) felony charges. He also has a $500. Bond set on three (3) outstanding traffic warrants.
