State Conference Draws Emergency Management Leaders

AUSTIN, May 14, 2015 - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Division of Emergency Management is welcoming public and private sector emergency management officials to San Antonio this week to exchange ideas and discuss best practices at the 2015 Texas Emergency Management Conference. The annual conference runs through May 15, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

“Emergencies that threaten public safety and homeland security can happen anywhere, at any time and run the gamut from severe weather and natural disasters to manmade disasters, industrial accidents and disease outbreaks,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “The unpredictable nature of such events underscores the vital need for extensive emergency planning, and this conference provides an optimal opportunity for local, state, tribal and federal organizations and officials to stay up-to-date on best practices and share ideas essential for effective emergency management.”

The annual conference attracts approximately 2,600 first responders, emergency managers, elected officials and decision makers from across the state to participate in emergency management workshops, presentations, training sessions and exhibits.

Conference participants include representatives from local, state and federal law enforcement, border security and port security, transportation and cyber security, as well as firefighters, emergency medical personnel, Texas Military Forces, volunteer organizations and private sector partners. Attendees also include officials from higher education, public education, health and medical care, and public officials from local, state, tribal and federal organizations. Representatives of more than 30 state agencies on the Governor’s Emergency Management Council are also participating in the conference.
