Liberty Police Shoot Strong Arm Robbery Suspect

LIBERTY, April 3, 2015 - During a press Conference held at the City of Liberty Police Department Liberty Police Chief Thomas Claunch related the events of Friday morning where a City of Liberty Police Officer shot an unarmed, strong arm robbery suspect at the Check Into Cash store in the 1900 block of US 90.

The City of Liberty Police Department received a hold up alarm from the Check Into Cash Store and immediately responded. A police officer on his way to work heard the call the responded in his personal vehicle to back up his fellow officer.

The strong arm robber had tied up two female clerks in a back room of the store.

As Officers were attempting to place the 19-year old, black, male suspect into custody he got up off the floor and charged the Officers.

The Officer who has two years of experience with the department discharged her weapon striking the suspect in the side.

Life Flight airlifted the suspect to Houston’s Hermann Hospital for treatment.

The names of the Officers involved and the suspect are being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Police Chief Claunch thanked the Dayton Police Department, Liberty County Sheriff’s Department, Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers and the District Attorney’s Office for their assistance.

Today is Police Chief Claunch’s third day on the job as the new Chief of Liberty Police.

The case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
