LIBERTY, December 11, 2015 – The Trinity River is currently above flood stage in Liberty and Moss Bluff.
The current gauge reading in Liberty is 26.74 feet ( flood stage is 26 feet) and at Moss Bluff the river is at 12.26 ( flood stage is 12.2 feet )
The River will continue to rise and projections take the river to a level near 29 feet in Liberty early next week and up to 13.7 feet in Moss Bluff.
The current release from the Livingston Dam is 48,200 cubic feet per second (cfs). Heavy rainfall is predicted for areas of the Trinity River basin this weekend and this rainfall could cause an increase in the release at the Livingston Dam that would be higher than our initial estimate of 50,000 cfs.
Residents living along the river should be prepared for water over the roads in some of the subdivisions and conditions are likely to be similar to those experienced in the October flood.
Right now we do not anticipate water levels to reach the height of the summer flood, but as everyone living along the river knows, heavy rain can certainly be a game changer so residents are urged to pay close attention to media reports. Folks with livestock in the river basin should also be alert for the potential of high water and make preparations now.
Residents that were affected by the October flood are urged to register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-3362 or by registering on-line at www.disasterassistance.gov
Liberty County is working to open a Disaster Recovery Center in Liberty, most likely the week after Christmas. This seems to be the best time to open as it gives residents time to register and receive their initial response from FEMA.
Once the initial response is received, citizens may have questions and the Disaster Recovery Center will be staffed with folks from various agencies that can answer those questions. Information regarding the opening date and location of that center will be passed on to everyone as soon as plans are finalized.
Questions or concerns, please feel free to call the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management at 936-334-3219.
