LIBERTY, November 23, 2015 - The good news today is that Trinity River Authority officials have reduced the outflow at the Livingston Dam and this is creating a rapid and much welcomed receding of the Trinity River in Liberty County.
Current release from the dam is 22,000 cubic feet per second and the Trinity River in Liberty is at 26.42 ( flood stage is 26 feet ) and in Moss Bluff the current reading is 13.89 ( flood stage is 12.2 feet)
This decrease should allow all roads around the river to be open for traffic soon and we are glad to report no serious issues for homeowners as the result of this river flood event. It was a close one, as another few inches of water would have created very serious problems for residents.
We do anticipate some road and bridge damage and your county commissioners will be checking for any issues affecting county infrastructure.
We owe a debt of gratitude to emergency management officials along the Trinity River upstream from the dam, as well as those at the dam, for working hard to stabilize the lake and at the same time, keep residents downstream of the dam from experiencing another flood similar to the one we experienced a few months ago.
Mother nature sometimes creates conditions that are beyond the control of officials, but this time things worked out as well as could be expected.
Turning to the October 31st heavy rain event that created serious flooding conditions in areas throughout the county, Governor Abbott has issued a Disaster Proclamation for 15 Texas counties, including Liberty County. Governor Abbott has also sent a Request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration to President Obama and we are awaiting a response regarding this request.
Right now there is no FEMA assistance available, however, as soon as we receive word regarding Governor Abbott's request, we will let everyone know if FEMA will be offering assistance to the affected residents.
