Marijuana Investigation

AUSTIN, July 3, 2014 - Sheriff Hawthorne reports on July 1, 2014 shortly after 1pm dispatch received a call from a local rancher advising of suspicious activity going on at his property he’s leasing from the Army Corp of Engineer’s. This property is located in west Chambers County on Gou Hole Road.

Upon meeting with the rancher, he stated while checking his property and he came upon the clearing. He further reported that when he approached the clearing two individuals that appeared to be camping there took off running once they spotted him. Once deputies arrived they were lead to a large wooded area near Gou Hole Road and FM 565. The clearing which was not accessible by vehicle, was approximately ¾ mile from the roadway through thick woods. The deputies arrived at an area where they observed a large amount of Marijuana plants. The deputies realized the magnitude of the growing operation and requested additional assistance.

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of DPS Special Crime Unit and DPS-Air Wing Unit collected approximately 5,500 plants which was determined to have a street value of approximately 2 million dollars. The plants were in different stages of growth from seedlings in starter plats to mature plants. This illegal activity from the setup of the camp appeared to have been in operation for some time.
