Bomb Threat at Liberty County Courthouse
LIBERTY, March 26, 2014 - A domestic situation involving an employee of the Liberty County Court House escalated to a possible bomb threat near the building which further resulted in a “shelter in place” of court house employees and a partial evacuation of small business locations on the north side of the building. No bomb was found but precautions had been taken to assure the safety of anyone near the area. Sheriff Bobby Rader, who was among the first on the scene and directed the overall operations, said the first priority was to clear and block off the street and shut down any entry or exiting of the court house by any citizen or employee into a possible dangerous situation. All office employees on the north side of the building were advised to move to the south side of the building and “shelter in place” as were employees of the Liberty City Hall which sits on the southwest corner from the parked truck.
The employee and her husband are reported to be in the process of a divorce action and at approximately 8:am this morning, he drove his 1999 Dodge pickup truck to the court house and parked it in the 1900 block of Trinity Street which is directly on the north side of the court house. He then got into his wife’s vehicle and drove away but called her and told her that she should get in the pickup truck and drive home. However, he added that she should be very careful driving the truck because it might explode. The employee contacted court house security Cpl. Kimberly Rodden and reported the allegations.
Immediately upon Cpl. Rodden’s report to the Sheriff’s Department units responded and secured the area. Capt. Mark Ellington, called for a ATF Bomb sniffing dog out of Beaumont which arrived and the truck was searched. No bomb or other type of explosive device was found and the scene was cleared at 11:50am for all employees to return to duty. The court house returned to normal operations.
This is the very early stage of the investigation and charges are expected to be filed but further details are not available at this time.
