Possible Winter Mix of Precipitation Thursday Night

LIBERTY, January 21, 2014 - We are closely monitoring the potential for a mix of wintery precipitation across all of southeast Texas on Thursday night and Friday. An arctic airmass will move into southeast Texas on Thursday and bring very cold air to the area. Temperatures are expected to fall to the freezing mark across all of the area on Thursday night, with the expection of the immediate coast where it will likely be just above the freezing mark, but a close call even there. The main threat window for winter precipitation is from midnight Friday until Friday afternoon.

See the attached graphic for details concerning precipitation type across the area. While not a lot of confidence on this yet, our thinking right now is generally a sleet/snow mix across the northwest 1/3 of the area, and a freezing rain/sleet mix across the southeast 2/3 of the area. Precipitation amounts are expected to be light with ice accumulations less than a tenth of an inch, and snow accumulations of an inch or less. It should be noted that models still differ on the location and chance of precipitation during this period. At this time, the main threat from this event appears to be icing on bridges and overpasses across the area.
