A Labor Day Message from the Texas Workforce Commission
AUSTIN, September 1, 2014 – Texas is home to more than 12.9 million workers who help strengthen our economy and ensure the prosperity of our great state. Texas’ history is full of stories about people who came to the Lone Star State in search of opportunity, who laid the foundation for the culture of ingenuity and work ethic that perseveres to this day. Texas is a place where people can find jobs, and not just any jobs, but jobs from flourishing industries which pay wages that allow Texans to support families and provide the basic necessities that contribute to our safety and security.
Texans have a lot to be proud of. Our nearly 485,000 employers have added an estimated 396,200 jobs in the past year, and Texas’ unemployment rate has remained well below the national rate. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and the state’s 28 local workforce development boards, which together comprise Texas Workforce Solutions, work closely with other economic development entities to help workers in Texas connect with good jobs in industries that will allow them to have long, prosperous careers.
Texas Workforce Solutions assisted nearly 1.5 million job seekers across Texas with reemployment and rapid response services during the 2013 fiscal year, including nearly 4,000 apprentices who received training to enhance their skills. Additionally, almost 92,000 employers received workforce business services in FY 2013, including applicant screening and referral services. WorkInTexas.com, TWC’s comprehensive online job matching system, has more than 500,000 registered users and is a free resource that provides job search assistance to individuals seeking work and recruiting assistance to employers in Texas. WorkInTexas.com has filled almost 2,125,000 jobs and has approximately 231,300 job openings posted for Texans seeking work.
Texas Workforce Solutions and our partners continue to look for additional innovative ways to serve hardworking Texans. We understand that our success as a state, and in our communities, rests in large part with the workers who have helped create so much economic prosperity. As you enjoy this holiday with family or friends, we thank you for helping to make Texas great.
