Theft Ring Operating at Local Motel

LIBERTY, March 22, 2014 – At around 7:50 AM Saturday the City of Liberty Police Department received a call regarding a theft in progress at the new City of Liberty Warehouse located on north main street where the old GM Auto Dearlership used to be.

The caller followed the suspects in the burglary and was able to give police the license number of the vehicle.

According to Detective Jennifer Bowles City of Liberty Police were able to locate the vehicle parked at the Inn at Liberty Motel on US 90 near Bowie Street. Police could then determine the room number and identity of the occupants.

Approximately $7,500 dollars of equipment and tools consisting of cutting torches and gauges, spools of copper tubing, new weed eaters, cordless electric drills, specialized hand tools kits, chain saws and similar items were taken. Additionally the burglars cut a hole in a chain link fence and broke locks on buildings in accomplishing their work.

Police obtained a search warrant for the room at the motel signed by Judge Tommy Chambers and City Employees were called to identify, claim and help recover the property.

When executing the search warrant Police found Jack Owens age 38 of Dayton hiding under the lavatory cabinetry in the motel room behind boxes and blankets.

Owens who had an outstanding warrant for theft of property was arrested and transported to the Liberty County Jail.

Owens’ brother Shawn Jordan age 34 of Dayton was Owens’ accomplice according police and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Not all the property missing from the city warehouse was recovered at the motel and it is thought the accused thieves had time to sell some of it for cash before the search warrant was served.

Furthermore, not all the property recovered from the motel belonged to the City of Liberty and it is suspected that this theft ring had been operating for more than a week out of the motel room and the other property recovered was from other burglaries.

If you have been the victim of a recent theft or burglary you are encouraged to contact the City of Liberty Police Department on Monday after the recovered items have been documented.
