Sheriff’s Department Truck Struck in Accident
LIBERTY, March 6, 2014 - Shortly after 7:00 AM on Thursday one of the big, new pickups, part of the Sheriff’s Department fleet was traveling south on SH 321 just north of FM 1960 when it was struck in the rear by a small Japanese sedan.
Corporal James Ott was sitting, stopped, in a line of traffic, South bound on Hwy. 321 at Hwy. 1960 in the City of Dayton waiting for a traffic light when his county vehicle was struck from behind by a car driven by Niesha Nicole Swift of the Beaumont area.
Liberty County EMS responded to the scene and transported the Deputy driving the truck to an area hospital for treatment.
According to a statement made by Ms. Swift, she is an Officer with the Texas Department of Corrections and had just gotten off duty at that facility on Hwy. 321 and was headed home, when she evidently dozed off at the wheel and ran into the rear of Cpl. Ott’s county unit. Neither Ms. Swift nor her passenger, Tiffany David, were injured. Damage to both vehicles was minor and drivable.
Southbound traffic on SH 321 was impaired due to the accident investigation.
Ms. Swift was charged with No Texas Driver’s License and for Failure To Control Speed.
