WINTER PRECIPITATION POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT

LIBERTY, March 3, 2014 - VERY COLD AIR HAS SURGED INTO SOUTHEAST TEXAS. TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING HAVE FALLEN INTO THE LOWER 20S NORTH...UPPER 20S CENTRAL AND MID 30S ALONG THE COAST. WIND CHILL VALUES ARE IN THE SINGLE DIGITS NORTH AND TEENS CENTRAL. THIS COLD AIR WILL LINGER THROUGH TUESDAY. A STRONG UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL APPROACH SOUTHEAST TEXAS LATE TONIGHT. RAIN IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND 3 AM AND OVERSPREAD MOST OF SOUTHEAST TEXAS BY SUNRISE. TEMPERATURES ARE CRITICAL WITH THIS PRECIPITATION EVENT AND AT THIS TIME...MINIMUM TEMPERATURES ON TUESDAY MORNING WILL RANGE BETWEEN 28 AND 32 DEGREES NORTH OF A WHARTON TO TOMBALL TO CLEVELAND LINE. IF THIS SCENARIO UNFOLDS...A PERIOD OF FREEZING RAIN WILL AFFECT AREAS NORTH OF A WHARTON TO CLEVELAND LINE. RAINFALL AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO RANGE BETWEEN 0.05 AND 0.10 INCHES SO IF TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW FREEZING....THERE COULD BE SOME SIGNIFICANT GLAZING OF ELEVATED SURFACES...TREES AND POWERLINES. HEAVIER RAINFALL TOTALS ARE EXPECTED NEAR THE COAST BUT TEMPERATURES SHOULD BE WARM ENOUGH TO KEEP THE PRECIPITATION AS A VERY COLD RAIN.

THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF UNCERTAINTY REGARDING TEMPERATURES AND IT WILL ONLY TAKE A FEW DEGREES OF WARMING TO TRANSITION THE WINTER PRECIPITATION TO A COLD RAIN. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MAY BE REQUIRED FOR LATER TONIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING. PLEASE KEEP UP WITH THE FORECASTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
