Two Year Old Missing Boy Found Alive and Well

LIBERTY, March 24, 2014 - A possible tragic event for a missing two year old little boy who wandered away from his home on CR 3795 in North Liberty County was averted this evening when a citizen found the small boy walking out of the woods on Hwy. 105 at Fostoria Road near the Liberty County/Montgomery County line. This was at the same time a cold front with rain was moving into the area and the child was only wearing a diaper and a light shirt when he left home at around 4:45 pm as darkness was nearing.

A relative was baby sitting the little boy while his parents, James Sumerall and his wife, Nichole were returning home from an out of town trip. According to the baby sitter, she had left the little boy playing in one room while she stepped into another room for a short while. When she returned, the child was gone and the back door was found open. The Sheriff’s Department was called at 5:13pm and Deputy Michael Strait and Cpl. Travis Pierce responded. While Deputy Strait took the lead of securing the details of the missing boy, Cpl. Pierce immediately set up a Command Post and called for search personnel as darkness was nearing and the rain and cold wind was beginning. Volunteer searchers of family and friends gathered while Sheriff’s personnel from both Liberty and Montgomery County responded. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse Search and Rescue team was in route as well as Texas EquuSearch.

Shortly before the searchers began to conduct an organized search, the child walked out of the woods with his two small puppies walking by his side. The little boy and his two puppies were picked up by the citizen who then drove the short distance back to a store in Montgomery County where the Sheriff’s Department was called and a Montgomery County unit picked the child up and returned him to a Liberty County unit.

It appears the child walked away from his home with his two puppies following him. They walked through a section of woods behind their home to a pipeline and then walked the pipeline to Fostoria Road and Hwy. 105 where they walked out of the woods and were found by a passing citizen. This was  almost two (2) miles from their home.  Neither the little boy nor his puppies were injured and all three were returned home just as the heavy cold rain begin to fall.
