USS HOUSTON Memorial Service

LIBERTY, March 6, 2014 - Please invite your friends to the USS HOUSTON Memorial Service next SATURDAY, 15 March, at 1400 HRS., 2 PM, in Sam Houston Park, Downtown Houston.

On February 28, 1942, USS Houston (CA 30) and Australian cruiser HMS Perth, survivors of the Battle of the Java Sea, were traveling under orders from Tanjong Priok, Batavia to Tjilatjap, Java when they encountered the Japanese. Engaged in a fierce, heroic overnight battle, both Houston and Perth were sunk by the enemy and the survivors were taken as prisoners of war. Soon after, the ABDA allied naval force was disestablished.

Captain Albert H. Rooks, USN. Captain Albert H. Rooks commanded USS Houston (CA 30) during the Battle of Sunda Strait and lost his life in battle when he was killed by a shrapnel burst when standing by a gun crew, all were also killed in the blast.
USS Rooks (DD-804), 1944-1962, was named in honor of Captain Rooks, who received the Medal Of Honor.
