Search Ongoing for Lost Man off FM 1409
WESTLAKE, September 28, 2014 - Liberty County Sheriff’s Department and the Westlake VFD is conducting a search off of CR 442 off FM 1409 south of Dayton in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 28, 2014.
According to Captain Ken DeFoor , Carl Givens and Matt McClanahan went mudding in a vehicle off CR 442 and their vehicle got stuck some 4 to 5 miles from FM 1409. Givens told his buddy, McClanahan, that he was going to walk out and get some help.
The pair had left to go mudding in the late afternoon of Saturday, September 27, 2014 and it was in the late evening some time around 9:00 PM on Saturday when LCSO Dispatchers received a 911 call from Givens who stated that he was lost.
Dispatchers pinged Givens’ cell phone and they could tell he was heading away, not towards, FM 1409 and they told him to turn around. He turned around and began walking in the correct direction. He later became lost and the dispatcher lost the signal to his cell phone due to poor reception or a dead battery.
The Coast Guard was called for a helicopter to aid in the search and at around 4:00 AM the helicopter had arrived on the scene to assist.
Early Sunday morning the search is ongoing with members of the Westlake VFD waiting on 4-wheelers at the scene for directions from the air.
Once is got daylight around 7:00 AM Givens was able to orient himself and came walking out along CR 442 after spending the night in the woods.
