Two Arrested during Traffic Stop in Daisetta
LIBERTY, August 8, 2014 – On Wednesday, 08/06/2014, at approximately 3:30 PM, Officer Terry Cosgrove of the Daisetta Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 500 Block of Main Street, at West Plum, in the City of Daisetta on a silver 1998 Volkswagon Passat, for failing to signal a lane change. Officer Cosgrove was assisted on the traffic stop by Liberty County Pct #2 Deputy Constable Chris Dryer.
Upon identifying the driver as being 34-year-old W/F Denita Audine Hayes of 13995 FM 787, Saratoga, Texas, the officer observed a passenger in the vehicle and knew him to be 39-year-old Christopher Matthew Bryant (AKA Jesse James) of 372 CR 1841, Raywood, Texas. As Officer Cosgrove and Deputy Dryer spoke to Hayes & Bryant, they observed both suspects to appear extremely nervous. Since the officers were familiar with Bryant, and knew that he'd recently been arrested on a Daisetta PD charge of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, the officers requested consent to search the vehicle and Hayes granted consent. Both occupants were requested to exit the vehicle and Officer Cosgrove initiated the search.
During the search of the vehicle, Officer Cosgrove located a white styrofoam container, such as those used by restaurants serving food to take-out customers, in the driver's side rear floorboard. Upon opening the styrofoam container, Officer Cosgrove then observed a plastic M&M candy container. Officer Cosgrove opened the candy container and discovered that it contained three small baggies which contained a white, crystalline, rock-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. Also located in the container were two small baggies containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. As Officer Cosgrove continued to examine the contents of the candy container, she discovered two more baggies containing what appeared to be prescription drugs. The pills and capsules were later determined to be Carisoprodol and Xanax.
Both Hayes & Bryant were arrested on charges of Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1 (Methamphetamine) greater than one gram but less than four grams (3rd Degree Felony), Possession of Marijuana less than two ounces (Misdemeanor B), Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 3 (Xanax) less than 28 grams (Misdemeanor A) and Possession of Controlled Substance Penalty Group 4 (Carisoprodol) less than 28 grams (Misdemeanor B).
Denita Audine Hayes & Christopher Bryant (AKA Jesse James) were transported to the Liberty County Jail where they were released to the jail staff for booking. As of August 7, 2014, both Hayes & Bryant remain incarcerated, each having a bond of $20,000.00 for the methamphetamine charges, $4,000.00 bonds for the Xanax charges, $1,500.00 bonds for the marijuana charges and $1,500.00 bonds for the Carisoprodol charges.
"Jesse Woodson James lived from September 5, 1847 until he was assassinated by Bob Ford on April 3, 1882. The REAL Jesse James was once quoted as saying, "Surrender had played out for good with me," and even though it is a known fact that the REAL Jesse James was a notorious thief, train robber, killer and all-around-outlaw, he is at least noted for saying something far more profound than, "It's not mine," said Chief Mike Parrish of the Daisetta Police Department.
All contraband seized in this investigation was secured in the Daisetta Police Department evidence locker located at 410 B Main Street in the City of Daisetta. Evidence will be forwarded to the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab in Houston, Harris County, Texas for analysis.
Additional charges in unrelated cases, currently under investigation, are pending against Bryant.
