Hurricane Season is in Full Swing
LIBERTY, August 5, 2014 - With two tropical cyclones in the Pacific making their way toward the Hawaiian Islands, it seems like a good time to remind local residents that we are just entering what is historically the busiest time of the hurricane season.
So far things have been relatively quiet in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, however our season does not peak until mid-September.
Now is the time to review your family plan, build your emergency supply kit, and make sure you are ready if a storm approaches. As we all know, when a storm strikes our area the electricity will certainly be out for an extended period of time. Having plenty of non-perishable food, water, and other necessary items is essential for sustaining yourself until the power is restored.
Should an evacuation be ordered, it is important to know your evacuation route. Those that might need assistance from authorities to evacuate, should register now by calling the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry at 211. Operators will take your information, add you to the states database, and make that information available to your local office of emergency management.
If you are in Liberty County you can also sign up to receive emergency text messages and emails from the Liberty County Office of Emergency Management by going to www.nixle.com or by simply texting your zipcode to 888777.
