Man Killed In Farm Tractor Accident

LIBERTY, May 7, 2014 - On Tuesday, May 6th, 2014, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) 911 dispatchers received a call regarding an elderly man that had been run over by a tractor and “brush hog” implement. Liberty County EMS and LCSO deputies responded to the scene in the 400 block of County Road 2089, between Hardin and Moss Hill. As soon as the emergency responders arrived, it was apparent that the victim, John William Skinner, 68, had died from his injuries.

LCSO Sergeant Kenny Dagle is the lead investigator for the incident. Sgt. Dagle said Mr. Skinner had decided to get some mowing done on his property and had asked his son, John Skinner, 36, to assist. The younger Skinner had fueled up and prepared the tractor for his father. Once the elder Skinner had mounted and started mowing with the Massey-Ferguson tractor, the younger Skinner went inside for a few of minutes. When the younger Skinner came back outside to check on his father, he saw the tractor was wedged into a corner of the property’s fence and his father wasn’t on it. He ran to check on his father and found him on the ground, apparently run over by the tractor.

Sgt. Dagle’s investigation indicated Mr. Skinner had clipped a utility pole guy wire which knocked him from his seat on the tractor. The rear wheel of the tractor then rolled over Mr. Skinner, killing him instantly.

Justice of the Peace, Cody Parrish was called to the scene to perform an inquest. After conferring with Sgt. Dagle and others at the scene, Judge Parrish did not order an autopsy. John William Skinner’s body was released to a funeral home of the family’s choosing.

Sgt. Dagle stated, “This was a sad and unfortunate accident, but from the evidence available at the scene, we can say the investigation is closed.”
