Man Shoots Himself while Driving

LIBERTY, June 14, 2014 - An Ames resident, Bobby Ray Bernard, age 49, his wife, Sonya Bernard, age 44 and their two young children were returning home from a day of fishing in the Galveston area when Bernard, while driving, decided to unload his 9mm semi- automatic pistol. Bobby Bernard told Sheriff’s Sgt. Kenny Dagle that as he attempted to “jack” a round out of the pistol, it accidently discharged striking him in the upper left leg above the knee.

After being shot, the Bernard's drove to Ames, Texas in South Liberty County where he left his small children and the gun. He then drove with his wife to the Liberty/Dayton hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound.

Bernard was later taken by Life Flight to Herman hospital in “stable” condition where surgery is expected to take place. No charges are expected to be filed.
