LIBERTY, April 10, 2014 - Thursday night around 10:39 PM two oversized, high loads were traveling eastbound on US 90 through Liberty accompanied by lift trucks to raise power lines as well as other escort personnel and vehicles.
Carl Martin age 53 of Dayton, TX was attempting to go to work at Boomerang Tube in Liberty and was traveling eastbound on MLK to get ahead of the wide load.
According to Officer Ries, Martin, driving a late model Dodge Pickup, went around one of the vehicles engaged in the lifting of power lines on Travis street to make a left turn onto US 90 and get to work and failed to see one of the escort workers in reflective clothing standing in the eastbound lanes of US 90 helping with the lifting of utility wires.
The escort worker, Christopher Stewart of Cleveland, TX, was struck by Martin’s pickup.
According to Officer Ries, City of Liberty Ambulance transported Stewart to a landing zone where he was transferred to the care of Life Flight and flown to a Houston Hospital for treatment.
