Train Collides with Tractor-Trailer Truck
DAYTON, September 13, 2013 – At approximately 2 pm, the Dayton Police Department along with the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department responded to an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a train at the crossing adjacent from the Magnolia Cemetery located on FM 1008 in Dayton.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Lee Roy Haynes of Houston, was scheduled to pick up a piece of heavy equipment just south of the RR tracks, when his heavy haul trailer became high-centered on the crossing.
Mr. Haynes exited his truck to raise the trailer in order to cross the tracks.
While out of his truck, he observed a train traveling westbound, and jumped in the truck to remove the trailer from the tracks, but the train struck the trailer before he could get it completely off the tracks. The truck was separated from the trailer and the train came to rest approximately ¼ mile past the point of impact.
Haynes was taken to East Houston Regional Medical Center by Liberty County EMS with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries to his back, neck and shoulder. There was minimal damage to the train and truck, but the trailer was a total loss.
Cpl. Danny Carr and Officer Brian Chowns will be investigating the accident to determine what charges if any will be filed.
