Swimming Outing Turns Tragic
LIBERTY COUNTY, May 26, 2013 - A family swimming outing turned tragic yesterday in a pond off CR 3747 near the Southern Crossing residential area in North Liberty County when sixteen (16) year old Megan Spade slipped beneath the water while swimming with her siblings.
Sheriff’s Deputy Rubin Arellano who received the call at approximately 5:15pm was only a few minutes away from the scene and arrived within minutes to find that Peter Olson, Grandfather of Megan had pulled her from the water and had begun CPR. Deputy Arellano then took over CPR efforts but when Liberty County EMS arrived a short time later, Megan was still unresponsive.
Initially, Megan was transported to Kingwood Hospital but later transferred to Memorial Herman Children’s Unit in Houston where she remains on life support as of 2:30am this morning.
According to Deputy Arellano, Megan was visiting her grand parents and all had gone to the swimming area for an outing. Reports indicates that Megan knows how to swim therefore it is unknown why she experienced difficulty while in the water.
At this time we have no further information on the young girl’s condition.
