Sheriff Institutes Random Drug Screening for Employees
LIBERTY, March 14, 2013 - At the end of the Sheriff’s March employee meeting, Bobby Rader announced a new policy change. The Sheriff said after careful examination of the Liberty County and Sheriff’s Office employee handbooks for compliance, he was instituting random drug screening. Liberty County already has drug screening as part of pre-employment for new employees, and for when an employee has an accident on the job. It is believed this is the first time the Sheriff’s Office has taken further steps to randomly test employees.
Sheriff Rader pointed out that all employees present for the meeting had signed-in on a numbered attendance sheet. He displayed a jar that contained all of the numbers present. He then drew ten numbers from the jar. The employees on the attendance sheet that coincided with the numbers drawn were asked to stay after the meeting and provide a urine specimen for testing.
Sheriff Rader states, “Law enforcement agencies are held to a higher standard than your average employer. I feel random drug screening will give the Sheriff’s Office a measure of credibility and accountability to our citizens. By including all S.O. employees and not just deputies on the street, it increases our overall professionalism.”
The new policy was well-received by the employees. The initial round of random testing saw the full range of employees participating. Among the names drawn were a patrol deputy and sergeant, an investigative sergeant, an administrative clerk and a temporary part-time employee.
Sheriff Rader also added, “While the monthly meeting is a good time to test a percentage of employees, in true random fashion, surprise tests can come at any time.”
