Are you Getting What You Pay For?
LIBERTY, November 13, 2013 – In looking at the 2013 property tax rates for a home in the City of Liberty VS. a similarly priced home in the City of Houston we asked ourselves a question, “Are you getting what you pay for?”
In comparing the summary below you can see that although home owners in Houston pay taxes to more taxing entities there taxes in Houston are lower than in the City of Liberty.
Home owners in Houston pay property taxes to eight different taxing entities and in the Liberty we pay tax to only six although our tax rates to these entities are higher.
The tax rate to Harris County is .40021 per hundred dollar valuation and in Liberty County it is .5788 per hundred dollars of appraised value. County taxes in Liberty County are significantly higher than in Harris County already.
Homeowners in Houston pay to support the Houston Community College System and the Port of Houston. Furthermore they receive the economic benefit of the Port of Houston and the educational opportunities offered by the Houston Community College. Even with these additional benefits we do not have in Liberty the total tax bill in Liberty for the same priced home is higher.
The tax rate for the Liberty County Hospital District is about four times what the tax rate for the Harris County Hospital District is. School taxes are slightly higher and so forth.
If you remove the Port of Houston Authority Tax and the Harris County Community College System Tax to make a better apples to apples comparison between Liberty and Houston the difference in the annual property tax bill for homeowners on a modestly priced $60,620 dollar home would be $155.37 per year less in Houston.
The tax problems for the majority of Liberty County Residents are not coming from Washington. They're local and come from right here.
In Liberty we are paying for less and it’s costing us more. We’re not getting what we’re paying for and with the County’s budgeting problems we most likely will be paying for even more in the near future without receiving any additional services.
Many enjoy the small town country living in Liberty, but it comes with a price.
