Big Mess at the Port of Liberty

LIBERTY, June 18, 2013 - After receiving several comments concerning the recent condition changes at the Port of Liberty, i-dineout.com went to the port to observe the situation and spoke to Liberty City Manager Gary Broz today.

Location of Barge identified at Port of Liberty

According to Gary Broz some months ago the Port of Liberty contracted with a company to remove and clean up an old barge that had been docked at the port for decades and had suffered extreme decay.

The company came in and started taking the barge apart and then they decided to quit. The Port of Liberty encouraged them to continue the work so they started the work again.

The work to demolish and remove the old barge began about three months ago and during this process according to City Manage Broz the company doing the demolition failed to secure the barge and tie it off. When the river came up the barge got loose from it’s moorings and floated down near the entrance to the port from the river and lodged there.

The demolition company then began work for the second time to complete the project and in the mean time according to Broz, “Rats ate the Styrofoam and it got into the water and now it’s everywhere.”

According to City Manager Broz, “The Texas Parks and Wildlife and TCEQ are working with the contractor to take care of the problem.”

Broz is confident that at some point the mess will be cleaned up.
