Betty Conner of Lafitte Society will be Speaker for Commission

LIBERTY, October 14, 2013 - The Liberty County Historical Commission will hold its regular quarterly meeting on Monday, October 21st at 6:00 p.m. in the parish hall of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.  The public is cordially invited to attend.  Betty Conner of the Lafitte Society will be the guest speaker for the evening.  Mrs. Conner was born in Galveston, was a graduate of Ball High School and majored in music at the University of Houston.  Her original goal was to be a music teacher and performer but found her interests were in government and civic activities.  Besides working in the Trust Department of United States National Bank and also as a Job Developer/Training Specialist for Operation Service, Betty has served her community for many years on a multitude of boards and committees.  Among them are the League of Women Voters at both state and local level, Children’s Protective Services, Advocacy Center for Children, and Chairperson of the Red Cross Disaster Education Committee specializing in hurricane preparedness.  She also worked with the Galveston County Emergency Management Director as chairperson of the Evacuation Committee and Public Education Committee.  She served 14 years on the Hospice Care Team Board and as a member of the Galveston County Recovery Fund Board that consisted of representatives of the four major foundations in Galveston.  She is well-traveled, having visited 35 foreign countries.  Mrs. Conner’s program will be about the life of Jim Bowie, from his birth, early years, his brief partnership with the privateer, Jean Lafitte in the slave trade, the knife fight that started his reputation as a fighter and made the Bowie knife famous along with his years in Texas and death at the Alamo.
