LCSO Receives Grant For Special Investigator

LIBERTY, September 13, 2013 - On Friday, September 13, 2013 the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) was awarded a grant from the Office of the Governor. The grant allows LCSO to hire a Child Crimes Special Investigator.

Sheriff Bobby Rader explains, “As the population of Liberty County increases, there will also be a proportionate increase in crimes against children. This grant will allow our office to have an investigator devoted exclusively to the investigation of these serious offenses.”

While LCSO has investigators trained and experienced in crimes against children, in the past, they had to divide their time between their case loads involving children and all other incidents requiring further investigation. With an investigator assigned solely to crimes against children, those cases will receive the focus and commitment that a specialist can provide.

The amount awarded in the grant was $121,504. The grant runs for three years, but LCSO has to reapply every year for the additional two years, supplying case statistics and how the funds were used.

The research for the grant, and the writing and application process was a group effort with LCSO and Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center. Four people were instrumental in the work done for the grant. Sergeant Investigator Joel Davila and Captain Ken DeFoor were doing what was needed at the Sheriff’s Office, while at Bridgehaven, Executive Director Paula Barron and Program Director Rachel Caudill took care of duties on their end.

Sheriff Bobby Rader says he expects the Child Crimes Special Investigator position to be up and running by October 1st. And just like the grant process, the investigator will be working closely with Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center to bring about successful investigations and prosecutions into some of the most difficult crimes the two agencies encounter.
