Flea Market Fire in North Liberty County
LIBERTY, September 16, 2013 – An early morning fire call was received by the Sheriff’s Department dispatcher at 2:50am this date regarding a fire at the Highway 59 Flea Market located at Hwy. 59 and CR 377 in North Liberty County. Deputy James McQueen Jr. responded as did Liberty County Fire Marshal Jim Wilson and several fire units from Cleveland, Montgomery County, Tarkington, New Caney and Splendora Fire Departments.
The flea market became totally involved in fire and it appears, at this time, the flea market will be a total fire loss. Deputy McQueen advises that the owner, Mr. Gary Millican of the Cleveland area stated that he had been having electrical problems over the week-end and that he had someone come out and cut the power off to the building. As far as he knows, there was no electrical power to the building at the time of the fire.
No injuries are reported as the flea market building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and fire units are still at the scene battling the very large blaze which is approximately 60 to 70 yards off Hwy. 59. Therefore, it was not necessary to shut Hwy. 59 down to regular traffic.
Fire Marshal Jim Wilson stated that as soon as the fire is extinguished and the fire remains cool down he will begin his investigation regarding the cause of the fire. At this time the investigation will be continuing by Fire Marshal Wilson.
