Entergy Texas Wants Customers to Know Assistance is Available
BEAUMONT June 22, 2013 – As summer temperatures rise, Entergy customers in need can get a helping hand from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, a U.S. government program providing home heating and cooling assistance to qualified families.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released the remaining LIHEAP funds for this fiscal year, which ends September 30. The funds were held as part of the U.S. government’s sequestration efforts but are now available to assist customers struggling to pay utility bills.
Texas has $9.1 million in newly available LIHEAP funds.
Those interested in applying for energy assistance from LIHEAP may go to http://entergy.com/our_community/low_income.aspx to find local agencies that distribute the funds.
“Every day, low-income customers living in the regions Entergy serves struggle to make ends meet in states with some of the highest poverty rates in the nation,” said Pam Williams, customer service operations manager for Entergy Texas. “With summer heat come increased utility bills. These add additional strain on low-income budgets. Entergy is working to ensure customers are aware that assistance is available through LIHEAP funding.”
As part of federal budget cuts required by law, LIHEAP and other discretionary funds were reduced. LIHEAP funding for this year was reduced by approximately 6.23% from 2012 and 36% since 2011.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program assists qualified families with home energy needs such as heating in the winter, cooling in the summer and insulating homes for energy efficiency. LIHEAP allows families to prevent electrical service interruptions and make weather-related improvements to their homes to maximize the effectiveness of the electricity needed to stay safe and comfortable during summer months.
