Entergy Texas Emphasizes Home Safety During National Electrical Safety Month

BEAUMONT May 14, 2013 – In recognition of National Electrical Safety Month throughout May, Entergy is joining with Electrical Safety Foundation International to raise awareness about potential home electrical hazards and the importance of electrical safety.

"Electricity has become such a safe and common presence in our daily lives that it's easy to lose sight of a few basic precautions we all should be following," said Todd Dunkleberger, regional customer service manager for Entergy Texas, Inc. "National Electrical Safety Month is an opportunity for Entergy to emphasize our year-round safety messaging with tips to help customers make their homes safer."

Electrical Safety Foundation International, or ESFI, reports that each year, home electrical fires in the U.S. are responsible for almost 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries and $1.3 billion in property damage. But fires are not the only danger. Annually, thousands of Americans are critically injured and electrocuted from accidents occurring in their homes. In fact, nearly seven children a day are treated in emergency rooms for electrical shock or burns caused by tampering with wall outlets.

A number of hazard-prevention technologies are now available for home use, such as arc fault circuit interrupters and tamper-resistant receptacles. While improved equipment has helped improve home safety, the most effective tool is awareness.

"Most electrical injuries can be avoided, provided we take the time to learn some safety skills," Dunkleberger said. "Entergy encourages customers to take a few minutes to review basic electrical safety rules and share them with their families. This could make all the difference in preventing harmful accidents from occurring in homes."

Entergy also reminds customers to follow safe practices outdoors when working on landscaping and home-improvement projects. Stay clear of overhead power lines when trimming trees or climbing ladders. Before digging projects, call 811 for a utility locator service to avoid hitting electric or gas lines.

Entergy's website, http://entergy.com, also offers safety information under the Energy Education link, including interactive features such as the Living Dangerously Quiz to test knowledge of common home safety tips. ESFI's website at http://www.esfi.org also contains an extensive collection of fact sheets and safety tips.

Entergy Corporation, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year, is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including more than 10,000 megawatts of nuclear power, making it one of the nation’s leading nuclear generators. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.8 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $10 billion and approximately 15,000 employees.
