Cemetery Records And Customs Topic For Genealogical Society

LIBERTY, October 10, 2013 - Madlyn Dill Simkulet, MLS will be the guest speaker at the October 15th meeting of the Liberty County Genealogical Society.  Madlyn is a 7th generation Texas and native of Baytown, a graduate of the University of Houston and taught elementary school for several years before going into training provided by the U. S. Department of Education to become a facilitator and teacher trainer.  She received her Masters of Library Science and Computers from Sam Houston State University and was a school librarian in Houston Public Schools.  She served as head librarian for the St. Mark’s Episcopal School, Houston and upon retirement, became head librarian for the Baytown Genealogy Research Library.  She has been involved in genealogical research for many years and her true passion is cemetery research.  In addition to her own personal research, she also does free lance research for others.  Madlyn has taught private classes, group classes and workshop sessions in doing genealogical research.  Her program will be “Planning a Trip to Record a Cemetery:  Different Kinds of Cemeteries and What We Can Learn From Them” Your community, town or city might not have a Wal-mart or a Bucky’s, but Mrs. Simkulet is sure it has at least one cemetery!  Cemeteries…..what do we know about them and what comes to mind when we hear the word?  Cemeteries are one of the oldest customs of society and offer us a wealth of information and insight to a community and the people that have lived in that community.  Her presentation will cover: (1) What we can learn from a cemetery besides just names and dates; (2) A look at cemeteries around the world and what they tell us about the beliefs and customs of the people; and (3) What we can do to save our older cemeteries that are being “lost” in so many communities.

The Liberty County Genealogical Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month in the DAR meeting room behind the historic Cleveland-Partlow House on Grand Avenue in Liberty at 10:00 a.m.  Guests and new members are welcome.  For more information email: libertygenie@yahoo.com .
