New Source of Funding for Illegal Drug Industry
LIBERTY, February 20, 2013 – As part of a lengthy i-dineout.com investigation focusing on the local illegal narcotics businesses in Liberty, new information was gained concerning how the drug business is conducted and its’ source of funding.
With help from local citizens, our investigation was aimed at discovering who were the visitors to what police and nearby residents believe to be a drug house operating in the City of Liberty.
For the past several weeks we have collected license numbers of the vehicles making short visits to the house. With that information we obtained the title and registration of the vehicles and have now identified the owners. That information has been turned over to our local law enforcement.
But we decided to dig a little more. What we found elevated this from just another story about “crack-heads” to a disturbing explanation of the source for their drug money.
The vehicle information identified owners but it also told more. It showed if there was a lien on the vehicle and to whom. A recurring name was familiar, “ Car Title Loan Services” and specifically their offices in Liberty and Texas City.
From the days of the Drug Task Forces in Texas and up until current times law enforcement has recognized that drugs are the root cause of much of our crime. It was common knowledge that individuals who use drugs participated in criminal behavior to fund their use of drugs. And those crimes are committed by the poor or unemployed.
But things are changing, because certain businesses who prey on the poor and unemployed saw a new way to make money while also hopefully keeping their current customers out of jail and still satisfying their drug craving.
Most people know that the car title and pay day loan business engages in predatory lending practices, taking advantage of people who don’t qualify for a loan anywhere else. And the only way they can get a car title loan is to place a lien on their property as security. What many don’t understand is how the Car Title Loan specifically, plays a role in funding the local drug business in your community.
To get a car title loan all you have to have is title to a vehicle and a Texas Driver’s License or ID Card.
You don’t have to have a job, checking account, credit history or anything else.
Unemployed users of drugs can obtain a loan of up to about a third of the blue book value of a vehicle they have title to in a car title loan. It’s as simple as that.
This activity has caused many Texas cities to act to address this problem. The Texas Tribune in a recent article told that since little has been done on a statewide level that many Texas cities are now attempting to regulate through City Ordinance the car title and payday loan industry.
Criminal activity is no longer the only source of funding drug purchases. You can now purchase drugs with borrowed money from a Car Title Loan.
