Auto Pedestrian Accident in Brookshire Brothers Parking Lot
LIBERTY, August 18, 2013 - Auto pedestrian accidents and auto bicycle accidents in recent months have been more common than usual. A man riding a bicycle was struck on FM 1409 south of Dayton. A vehicle struck a pedestrian walking on US 90 in Ames and a second pedestrian was struck by vehicle on FM 160 in Ames as well. All those accidents resulted in fatal injuries to the victims.
On Sunday morning around 10:00 AM City of Liberty EMS was summoned to respond to the parking lot of Brookshire Brothers in Liberty because a man had been struck by a vehicle.
But in this instance, unlike the accidents mentioned above where the pedestrians were struck by vehicles driven by others, this man was struck and injured by his own vehicle that he was the driver of.
According to Officer Hebert with the City of Liberty Police Department, the driver of a white Suburban got out of his vehicle because the vehicle was having mechanical trouble of some kind after backing it out of a parking space and into a traffic lane in the parking lot. Not realizing the he had left the vehicle in gear; he crawled under the vehicle in front of the front tire. While under the Suburban, the vehicle lurched forward and the front tire ran over him dragging him a short distance in the parking lot.
As soon as the vehicle moved forward the man’s passenger, sitting in the front passenger seat was able to stop the vehicle from her position on the inside, right side of the vehicle and an ambulance was summoned.
According to Officer Hebert, the man was in considerable pain as EMS responded having suffered possible broken ribs but did not want to be transported to the hospital which Officer Hebert thought would be the best thing to do in the situation.
Should the man refuse transport, according to Officer Hebert friends or family would take him to the hospital by private vehicle.
The injured driver in the accident was Stacy Mitchell of Liberty and his passenger was Jennifer Terry.
