Three Vehicles Collide US 90 and Main Street

LIBERTY, April 1, 2012 - The City of Liberty Police Department was called to investigate an accident at US 90 and Main Street in Liberty by witnesses around 11:01 PM on Saturday night.

According to Officer Elizabeth Polasek of the City of Liberty Police Department, a white Ford pickup driven by Adam VanDeventer age 16 of Liberty was eastbound on US 90 in the turn lane to attempt a left turn onto Main Street when he disregarded the stop light crossing into the westbound lane in front of oncoming traffic.

A green Ford pickup driven by Michael Jakel age 26 of Humble, TX traveling west and a yellow Chevy Coupe also traveling west collided with the white Ford pickup in the westbound lanes.

Immediately after the accident the driver in the yellow Chevy fled the scene with his car giving off heavy smoke. Witnesses to the accident in the brown pickup and a white Chevy pickup followed the yellow Chevy to where it was abandoned on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive between Austin and Crockett Streets just a few blocks from the scene of the accident where it died. The air bags in the vehicle had also deployed.

The driver of the yellow Chevy, Jose Vera age 28 of Liberty, got out and fled on foot to his residence, a brick house on the corner of Crockett and Cos Streets in Liberty followed by the witnesses who reported the location to police.

According to Officer Polasek, upon arrival she knocked on the door and Vera answered telling her that he had been in an auto accident and fled.

Vera claimed that the reason he fled was because of his unclear immigration status having only a Mexican Identification Card and no US Driver’s License.

Vera was eventually taken into custody charged with Failure to Stop and Give Information and No Driver’s License. He was transported to the Liberty County Jail.

All vehicles involved in the accident were insured.
