Early Morning Accident on SH 321
DAYTON, October 1, 2012 – Around 5:30 AM on Monday a female worker at the State Prison north of Dayton was traveling on SH 321 and struck a deer disabling her vehicle and receiving minor injuries. She phoned a coworker at the Plane State Jail to come and pick her up.
The female coworker was identified as Rachel Thomas age 44 of Humble, TX who was driving a 2012 model Volkswagon sedan.
Thomas left the prison in route to pick up her coworker traveling south on SH 321. Near the bottom of the overpass on SH 321 north of the Dayton High School Thomas attempted and U-Turn and pulled into the path of an oncoming 18 wheeler, according to witnesses.
The 18-wheeler struck Thomas’ car broadside sending it into the ditch on the eastbound side of the roadway.
The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department and Liberty County EMS responded to the scene of the accident rescuing the Thomas from her vehicle and managing traffic control as SH 321 was closed to traffic for some time while this accident was investigated and the roadway cleared of debris.
Rachel Thomas was transported by Liberty County EMS to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown for treatment of her injuries sustained in the accident.
Officer Robbie Thornton of the Dayton Police Department investigated the accident.
