3:00 AM Shoplifter Strikes Wal-Mart
LIBERTY, March 16, 2012 – Around 2:55 AM on Friday morning a citizen called the Liberty Police to report they had seen a man push a shopping cart containing a swimming pool passed the cash registers without paying for the merchandise and out the door.
Police responded to the scene and Corporal Frank Longoria located the man pushing the shopping cart containing the swimming pool south on Lakeland Drive approaching the Police Station.
The man was identified as Mike Sorrells age 39 of Liberty and was taken into custody.
After the investigation and the arrival of Wal-Mart personnel on the scene to retrieve the merchandise Sorrells was transported to the Liberty County Jail.
Further investigation by the police into the incident which included a review of surveillance tapes revealed that Sorrells was not acting alone and in fact a driver in a getaway car in the parking lot had been waiting for Sorrells to exit the store. Tapes reveal that by the time Sorrels was exiting the store he was being pursued by a mature man on a shopping scooter at top speed. When the getaway driver saw this, he abandoned the plan and left Sorrells to fend for himself.
