Romney’s Plan to Win: Lyme disease

VIRGINIA, September 30, 2012 – Recently the Romney campaign is targeting one of the major issues on the minds of voters in battleground states including those in Virginia. What’ s the major concern on the minds of voters in these states? According to the Romney Campaign it’s not Medicare, Social Security, or Inequality in America. It’s Lyme disease and those hideous ticks that bite people and cause this insidious disease.

Although, “According to the CDC there are less than 1,000 reported cases of Lyme disease in Virginia a year — in a state of eight million people,” the Romney Campaign recently sent out a statewide glossy mailer in Virginia to address this issue with a photo of Mitt Romney and his wife with the claim, “Doing more to Fight the Spread of Lyme Disease.”

Furthermore Mitt Romney wrote to Representative Smith and Wolf on August 3, 2012 in the following letter…

We don’t know much about Romney’s strategy to combat Lyme disease however we do know from studies that the spread of the disease is aided and abetted by climate change and global warming.

However, Romney, being a non-believer in global warming stated, “The government should do nothing to stop man-made climate change—if it's even happening at all.”

If Mitt Romney does not believe in the very thing that’s causing the increase in Lyme disease cases in the US, then we must wonder just how he intends to combat the disease.

According to the flyer mailed out in Virginia, which asks the question what, can the President do to combat Lyme disease? The mailer promises that Romney and Ryan will:

Ensure that government agencies have an open line of communication and work with patients, researchers, doctors, and businesses in an objective, comprehensive manner.

Encourage increased options for the treatment of Lyme Disease and provide local physicians with protection from lawsuits to ensure they can treat the disease with the aggressive antibiotics that are required.

According to Slate the translation for the Romney strategy is: Forget the science, just channel your legitimate fear of a dangerous disease and your misguided fear of the medical establishment into a vote for us.
