Cory Long named New Liberty County Extension Agent
TEXAS, September 25, 2012 - "Cory Long has been named the new Liberty County Extension Agent - Agriculture and Natural Resources," according to Dale A. Fritz, Ph.D., District Extension Administrator, and the Liberty County Commissioners Court. Cory will assume his new duties on October 29, 2012 and fills the position previously held by Ron Holcomb, who retired in mid-May.
Long earned a Master of Science Degree in Animal Science from Sam Houston State University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Business also from Sam Houston State University. While at Sam Houston, he was active in the Block and Bridle Club.
For the past two years and while attending Sam Houston State University, Long served as the Ranch Manager for Caledonia Farms in Huntsville. In this role, he managed the Longhorn herd and oversaw the health, nutrition and appearance of livestock show animals. He also maintained the grounds of the facility and farm, and implemented business aspects of livestock marketing. In addition, he conducted clinics and workshops for local youth on livestock project selection, care, management, and showmanship.
Prior to his current position, Long served as a Sales Associate with Baskins Department Store in Huntsville, a Yard Helper with Hi-Tech Pump and Crane in Channelview, and Landscaper with D&L Mowing Services in Houston. He also served as a Professional Animal Fitter with Council Family Limousines in Madisonville. In this role, he traveled to various livestock shows to maintain the show animals and manage their health, nutrition, and appearance. These work assignments provided many experiences in working with people, livestock projects, and agriculture.
Long was active in the Harris County 4-H and Huffman FFA Programs with 9 years of experience in 4-H and 4 years of experience in FFA. While in 4-H and FFA, he exhibited beef heifers, steers, swine and poultry projects. He also served in leadership roles with his 4-H club and FFA chapter and competed in Livestock Judging and Career Development Contests. His experiences and project work helped him earn the FFA Chapter Farmer, Lone Star Farmer, and American Farmer Degrees.
