Two Deputies Shot in Woodland Hills DAYTON, March 9, 2010 - Although details are sketchy at the present time i-dineout.com had learned that two Liberty County Sheriff’s Department Deputies have been shot in the Woodland Hills Subdivision north of Dayton at about 5:20 AM Tuesday morning. Officer Hugh Bishop of the City of Liberty Police Department is assisting the Sheriff’s Department in getting information out to the public concerning this event.
Members of the Baytown SWAT Team Bishop told i-dineout.com this morning that the Deputies were responding to call of shots fired early this morning and when they arrived on the scene they came under fire as well.
The Deputies were Jeremy Marcantel, age 32 and Rex Evans. Deputy Marcantel has been with the Sheriff’s Office for about three or four years according to James Carson of the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department and Deputy Evans has been with the department for about 6 to 8 months having come from Harris County. Luckily the injuries the Deputies sustained were not life threatening. Both Deputies were transported by Liberty County EMS to Houston’s Hermann Hospital for treatment. At present time it is unclear if both of the Deputies were wearing bulletproof vests and what role vests may have played in this incident. EMS Personnel and members of the news media were stationed a considerable distance from the crime scene at the intersection of CR 6473 and CR 6479. At press time the Baytown SWAT Team had arrived to assist in locating the suspect who is thought to be still armed hiding in a wooded area. TDCJ tracking dogs have also arrived to assist in the search and apprehension of the shooter. While on the scene this morning i-dineout.com learned the deputies were able to return fire and may have wounded the suspect. At this point it is not clear. The Dayton Independent School District has canceled school bus service in the Woodland Hills Subdivision and according to Officer Hugh Bishop residents in the subdivision are requested to shelter in place. At 9:45 PM Officer Hugh Bishop told i-dineout.com that the scene is now secure and any danger has passed. We await further details and will bring them to you as soon as they are available. UPDATE: 10:31 AM Tuesday, March 9, 2010 - According to Officer Hugh Bishop the suspect in today's shooting of Deputies Marcantel and Evans is deceased. The scene is now secure and all danger has passed. Deputy Evans will be treated and released from Hermann Hospital today. Deputy Marcantel was going to be going to surgery to remove shrapnel from his body, however, Doctors at the hospital have decided to wait and see what difficulties will arise before taking the risk of a surgical procedure.
