Alvarez spoke to attendees at the ICare4Autism 2018 National Disability Conference in Washington, DC
 

AUSTIN October 16, 2018 - Texas Workforce Commissioner Representing Labor Julian Alvarez delivered remarks at the ICare4Autism 2018 National Disability Conference held this week in Washington, DC. The ICare4Autism National Conference joins together speakers and experts in the field to strengthen the workforce across the United States by streamlining career paths and increasing employment opportunities for people with special abilities.

Commissioner Alvarez spoke about the importance of creating apprenticeship opportunities for all youth, including those with disabilities.

“Our workforce must be representative of who we are as a culture and who we are as a culture involves all kinds and types of people,” said Alvarez during his remarks. “Individuals with disabilities have been problem solving their whole lives. This is who you want in your workforce – problem solvers.”

The ICare4Autism Conference featured nationally renowned educators in the study of Autism, representatives of disability advocacy organizations, experts of employment and labor policy, and key leaders in education whose goal is to introduce a comprehensive training program across the United States for high school students with disabilities, meaning individuals with special abilities and strengths as well as challenges.

Apprenticeships are readily available to create a necessary pipeline to fill high demand jobs. 1.6 million is the approximate number of working age Texans (18-64) who have one or more disabilities. In Texas, 85,000 Texans with disabilities actively seeking employment. Employers may not know that 59 percent of accommodations cost nothing, while others have onetime cost of $500.

The Texas Workforce Commission is partnering with the Texas Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities and the Texas Workforce Solutions network a campaign called Texas HireAbility to raise awareness about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities and to highlight the contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce.
