County Historical Commission Receives Award From THC

LIBERTY June 27, 2018 ⎯ The Liberty County Historical Commission was honored with the DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD for the year 2016 Tuesday, June 26th during Commissioner’s Court.  The honor was presented to County Chair, Linda Jamison by Judge Jay Knight.

The Texas Historical Commission recognizes County Historical Commission (CHC) service with the Distinguished Service Awards each year to recognize CHCs that demonstrate exceptional service to preserve the heritage of Texas.  This award acknowledges the work and contributions of the Liberty County Historical Commission which excels when compared statewide with other CHCs.  DSA criteria are based on the work outlined for CHCs in Chapter 318 of the Texas Local Government Code.  CHC work and achievement is evaluated through an annual report submitted to the THC each February.

L-R: Commission members Paul Henry, Roberta Thornton, Ada Fay Schmidt, County Chair Linda Jamison, County Judge Jay Knight and commission member, Gloria Stratton

The Texas State Legislature established the agency (THC) in 1953 as the Texas State Historical Survey Committee with the task to identify important historic sites across the state.  The Texas Legislature changed the agency’s name to the Texas Historical Commission in 1973.  Along with the name change came more protective powers, an expanded leadership role, and broader educational responsibilities and the establishment of County Historical Commissions in all 254 counties in Texas as local partners and liaisons with the THC.  CHCs operate with oversight by the Commissioner’s Court but are an unpaid, all volunteer commission.

The mission of the Liberty County Historical Commission locally is to preserve historical and cultural resources in this county and encourage heritage tourism for economic impact. We meet quarterly in the A.J. Hartel Building, 318 San Jacinto, Liberty, at 6:00 p.m., January, April, July and October on the third Monday.  The public is encouraged to attend.
