Washington-on-the-Brazos Hosts Juneteenth Heritage Celebration

WASHINGTON, June 26, 2017 - Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site will be hosting a free Juneteenth Heritage Celebration 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday to showcase the rich African-American heritage and culture of the Brazos Valley, past and present.

The program will include artifact exhibits; art displays; prominent guest speakers such as historians, former athletes and genealogists; living history buffalo soldiers and cowboys; church choir performances; food and more.

Speakers during the event include Hugh McElroy, the first black football player to start in a game for Texas A&M University in 1970 and Dr. Andrew Torget, a professor of history at the University of North Texas and author of “Seeds of Empire: Cotton, Slavery, and the Transformation of the Texas Borderlands, 1800-1850.”

The Juneteenth Heritage Celebration will be held at the Visitor Center Complex, Conference Center and Education Center within the park.
